The rapid determination of the concentration of soluble aluminum in the liquid steel has been made by electrochemical oxygen sensors.
In terms of concentration of [Al] relatively low, the Aluminum is very close to equilibrium with the Oxygen. Thus the Oxygen activity measured by conventional sensors is quite well related to the Aluminum concentration.
However, under extra-low Oxygen conditions, due to some interaction with alloying elements such as Si, Mn, Ti, Cu, etc., the equilibrium [Al] - [O] is destroyed and conventional sensors fail in determining the Aluminum.
ECIL MET TEC has developed a new sensor that allows a rapid and direct determination of the Aluminum activity (% Al), without suffering the influence of alloying elements.
